ARCH - Rowena Hughes Edition

Rowena Hughes (b.1979, London), lives and works in Athens and London.

This is a photograph of one of a series of black and white paintings of the eyes of the people in my life. The painting of the child’s eye was photographed taped up on my studio wall with the dappled shadows of the fig tree outside of my window and the golden late afternoon light. The resulting photograph becomes the artwork.

Moving my studio to the island and living in much closer contact with the natural world I have become increasingly interested in working with the contingency and unpredictability of natural phenomena.

This photograph catches a chance moment of confluence of light and shadow with an image I have created depicting a fleeting moment in a child’s life.
